Singing day at Angel Centre will unite primary singers in Tonbridge
Our newly re-formed singing group, The CG Factor, will be joining others on Tuesday 30th October to spend a day singing and performing to parents. This promises to be great fun but also extremely beneficial to the children in other ways. The following comes from a recent article in the BBC News magazine:
A £10m national campaign has been launched to get primary school children and their teachers singing more. How can it help learning?
It's not often pupils are encouraged to raise their voices in school, but that's what the government wants them to do.
Over the years singing has almost disappeared from the classroom but a £10m national campaign has now been launched to get pupils in primary school singing - and their teachers.
Experts say that singing not only builds children's confidence, it is also a valuable teaching tool. Why?
Music can be used to reinforce challenging concepts, numeracy, motor skills and language development, says Howard Goodall, composer and the government's singing ambassador. Learning song lyrics can improve mental agility and reading skills.
"When children are singing they are taking in information and training the brain but they don't think they are, they think they are just having fun."

SPORTS: Rugby Tournament |

Year 3, 4 and the Centre have been having tag rugby coaching with a coach from the Tonbridge Sports team. This gave them good practise for the Adam Sale Rugby Day which was held on 22nd March. Our year 3 and year 4 teams played brilliantly as did all the children in 32 teams which played during the afternoon and they all should be really proud of the way they represented their schools.
The Centre children put on a great display of Rugby skills after their training with Darren, our popular rugby coach from Hayesbrook.
The event itself was quite moving for staff, children and Adam’s family who attended. We were all reminded again of Adam’s love of sport and his enthusiasm for life itself. We also realised again how much we miss him and all that he did for the school.

The Tunbridge Wells recorder festival on Tuesday at Weald of Kent was attended by six primary schools from Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells. Over 70 year 5 and 6's played ten tunes and there was even audence participation!

YEAR 5: Victorian Day |

As you may know, Year 5 are currently studying the Victorians. It is with this in mind that a Victorian day is being organised for Year 5 students on Monday 5th March. This will give the children an insight into fashion, teaching and learning styles during the Victorian era. We have booked a Company called “History off the Page” who have been in before to cover the Victorians, Romans and Greeks. They really transport the children back in time and they spend all day ‘in character’, learning so much about the way of life. Please could all children be sent to school in Victorian clothes. As a rough guide to the fashions of the time, girls should wear a long dark coloured skirt with a white apron over the top. Boys should wear short trousers, a waistcoat and a flat cap.

YEAR 2: Visit to Tudeley |

Year 2 visit to Tudeley
On Wednesday, 31st January, our Year 2 classes are going on a morning visit to Tudeley Church.
The reason for our visit is two-fold: to look at a place of worship for R.E., and also to see the famous Chagal stained glass windows. It should be a really exciting trip. Lets hope it will be a warm and sunny January day.
To cover the cost of the coaches and to make a small donation to the church, we are asking for a voluntary contribution of £2.30. Unfortunately the local authority does not subsidise the cost of the visits so if the full costs are not able to be met the trip may have to be cancelled. If there are any real problems, please do contact us to discuss the matter.
Your child will need to wear school uniform and a warm coat, scarf etc. We will return to school before lunch.

YEAR 1: Henna Lady |

One of our topics that we are covering this term is looking at the life in India and how it is similar and different to life in Tonbridge. We have been able to arrange a visit from a lady who does Henna designs.
We have invited her into school on Wednesday, 24th January and we need to ask for a contribution of £2.00 to cover the cost of her visit.
The children will be doing their own henna work on pieces of card, not themselves!
We are sure this will be a very interesting and exciting day.

YEAR 6: Church Visits |

As part of our studies in RE, the Year 6 children will be visiting two contrasting church buildings in Tonbridge town centre.
The visit will take place within school time, on Tuesday 30th January. We need to ask for a contribution of £1.40 to cover the cost of the coach.
The local education Authority does not subsidise the costs of visits. If parents are unable to meet the full cost, the visit may have to be cancelled. However, if there are any real problems, please do not hesitate to come and discuss the matter with us.
Please return the permission slip and money as soon as possible.
Should either of the churches cancel our visit, due to unforeseen circumstances, the trip will be re-booked at the earliest convenient opportunity.

GODSTONE FARM VISIT – Friday 23 March 2007
As part of next term’s study of “Growing and Baby Animals”, we are delighted to offer our Reception children the opportunity to take part in an outing to Godstone Farm, Godstone, Surrey.
We will be leaving school promptly at 9.15 and will return by 3 pm. Children will need:
• to wear school sweatshirts/cardigans and jeans or trousers and school shoes (not trainers) and bring Wellington Boots in a carrier bag labelled with their initials
• wet weather clothing (a waterproof coat with a hood) or a sunhat and sunscreen (applied in advance), depending on the weather
• a packed lunch, in a disposable bag, with a drink and their water bottles, but please no glass bottles, fizzy drinks or chocolate
• travel tablets if appropriate (please hand to a teacher in a named envelope on the day of the trip)
• no money is necessary
In order to cover the cost, we would appreciate a voluntary contribution of £9.20 per child (£4.90 of which is non-refundable) which should be returned to our Reception classroom by Thursday 15 March at the latest, with the attached consent form. The payment can be made in two instalments if preferred. The local authority does not subsidise the cost of school visits so if insufficient contributions are received, the trip will be cancelled. If you do have a real problem, please do contact us to discuss the matter.
