The Governing Body of any school, including Cage Green, is legally responsible for what happens at the school. In practice, the Head, Mrs Sue Miller, runs the school on a day-to-day basis and reports to the Governing Body. The Head is both the senior education professional of the school and its most senior manager. The Governing Body, by contrast, is made up of people representing different groups who have an interest in the success of the school.
Because of this different mix of people who view the school from different perspectives and who each have their own, individual, set of skills and life experiences, the Governing Body is able to give additional support and guidance to the Head and her senior managers. There are a number of areas where the governors are given specific responsibilities. The most important are:
- Curriculum
- Development & Planning
- Finance
- Health and Safety
- Additional Educational Needs
- Personnel, Pay & Performance
- Marketing
The full Governing Body meets once a month during term time. Various sub-committees will also meet between the main meetings, to look at their specific areas of responsibility. These sub-committees often include people, such as teachers, who are not governors but are closely involved with the subject matter. This is a good way for governors to keep themselves well informed about progress. Governors will also visit the school from time to time to see how a particular aspect of school life is working. The main meetings will hear reports from the sub-committees, from the governors’ visits and from the Head. An important part of the work of Governors is to plan for the longer term and to decide on the priorities for the school to focus on, in terms of areas for development and improvement. This is done in conjunction with the staff of the school but also with regard to the requirements of Government, advice from the Local Education Authority and feedback from parents.
The Governors write a report to parents each year and hold a meeting to discuss its contents.
If you are interested in knowing more about the work of the Governors please approach any one of us.
